Connecting Pakistan and China, the Karakoram Highway is often hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” due to its high elevation and the complex conditions under which it was constructed. It stretches over 800 miles, reaching heights of up to 15,300 feet, making it the highest paved road across the globe. This engineering marvel braves through one of the world’s most rugged terrains as it crosses the Karakoram mountain range, including the challenging high-altitude border crossing at Khunjerab Pass.
The construction of the Karakoram Highway began in 1959 and was completed in 1979 by the combined efforts of both Chinese and Pakistani workers. Over these two decades, the project faced many difficulties, such as harsh weather conditions and difficult mountainous terrain, which claimed the lives of many workers. This has led to the road being commemorated by some as the “Highway of Heroes”.
The highway not only serves as a key trade route between Pakistan and China but has also become a significant tourism drawcard. Its raw beauty and panoramic views attract adventure tourists and biking enthusiasts who are eager to tackle the challenging roads while being surrounded by some of the tallest peaks in the world, including the famous K2 mountain. Moreover, it allows visitors easier access to explore Gilgit-Baltistan's scenic valleys and the ancient Silk Route’s heritage sites.
Besides boosting tourism and trade, the Karakoram Highway has greatly impacted the daily lives of the local populace by improving transportation and communication facilities. This has, in turn, helped in socio-economic development in some of the remote regions along the highway.
The Karakoram Highway, often termed as KKH, stands as a symbol of friendship and collaboration between Pakistan and China. As part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) plan, there are ongoing efforts to upgrade and expand the highway to better facilitate transport and trade. This transnational road continues to be not only a critical transportation artery but also a stunning testimony to human fortitude and endurance.
