Sea otters, charming marine animals known for their playful nature, exhibit a particularly endearing behavior that has captured the hearts of animal enthusiasts around the world. While they are asleep, sea otters hold hands, or paws, to prevent drifting apart from each other in the water. This fascinating behavior serves a critical purpose, reflecting the importance of social bonds among these animals.
Sea otters spend the majority of their lives in water; they eat, sleep, and groom themselves while floating in the chilly waters of the Pacific Ocean. Their environment poses constant challenges, not least of which is staying together when the currents and waves are always moving. By holding hands, they create a physical bond that keeps them united against the forces of the ocean.
This hand-holding behavior, or "rafting," is typically exhibited by mothers and their pups, as well as by adult pairs. When they take to resting, sea otters will lie on their backs and extend their paws to one another. The resulting linkage forms a "raft" that can even expand to include dozens of otters, bonding together through interlinked paws or by wrapping themselves in kelp to anchor the group in place.
Moreover, these rafts are not just practical but critical for the otters’ survival, providing safety in numbers which helps protect against predators and the cold. Each sea otter has a unique fur coat that is exceptionally thick to provide insulation against the cold water. By staying close together, they share body heat, thereby maintaining their body temperature and conserving energy.
Interestingly, research has shown that this rafting behavior is more commonly observed in females. Male otters tend to be more solitary or form smaller groups, possibly due to their territorial nature.
