More About This Card

While it may sound a bit unsettling, the thought that a person could unknowingly eat up to 70 different insects in their lifetime during sleep is a common urban legend. Though the actual likelihood of such an event is far less dramatic, the myth persists, often causing unnecessary alarm or disgust.

Firstly, the origin of this idea seems to stem from misunderstanding how insects and humans interact. In reality, most insects have little desire to approach a human mouth. Many insects are repelled by the breath we exhale, which is rich in carbon dioxide. Moreover, our bodies are generally in motion even when we sleep — breathing, shifting, and possibly snoring — all activities that would deter a small insect.

Furthermore, the structure of our homes plays a significant role in limiting the type of insects that might have access to our sleeping areas. Modern homes, with their sealed environments, are designed to keep out pests. Regular maintenance and hygiene practices like using insect repellent screens, keeping the house clean, and disposing of waste properly go a long way in preventing bugs from entering our living spaces.

On the occasions that an insect might venture close to a sleeping person, most are likely to avoid direct contact. The majority of insects that you might find in a home, like houseflies, ants, or mosquitoes, are more interested in scavenging for food or water rather than exploring human mouths.

That said, accidental ingestion of insects is not impossible but is more likely to occur through other means, such as eating foods in which insects have inadvertently been processed. This type of consumption is far more common and even unavoidable at tiny scales, given the nature of agricultural production and processing.

In essence, while the image of swallowing dozens of insects in one's sleep is compelling as a sensational fact, it's more fiction than reality. Sleep easy knowing that the chances of a bug banquet occurring in your mouth are exceptionally slim. If you're concerned about pests, focus more on preventative measures to keep insects out of your home, ensuring a peaceful and insect-free environment.
