Abscam, short for "Arab scam," was a highly controversial Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sting operation initiated in the late 1970s. It originally targeted trafficking in stolen property and corruption of public officials. Over time, the operation, famously known through its fictitious company name, Abdul Enterprises, expanded into a broader investigation that primarily focused on political corruption.
The operation involved FBI agents posing as representatives of Arab businessmen who offered bribes to American public officials in exchange for various political favors, including assistance in obtaining asylum in the U.S. and facilitating business deals. Abscam famously used a yacht and a rented mansion rigged with hidden video and audio equipment to capture the illegal transactions on tape.

In total, more than 30 political figures were targeted, leading to the conviction of seven members of Congress, including six members of the United States House of Representatives and one senator.
