Remarkably, the basilica surpasses St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in terms of spatial dimensions, although St. Peter's retains its place as the largest church by interior measurement.
The construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace was commissioned by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first President of Ivory Coast. The design draws heavily on the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica, replicating its iconic dome and encircling colonnades, though it stands taller at 158 meters (including the cross at its summit). The project was completed in 1989, at a reported cost of several hundred million dollars, a figure that sparked debate given the economic conditions of Ivory Coast at the time.
The basilica is set within a well-groomed expanse of grounds covering 130 acres and can accommodate 18,000 worshipers — 7,000 seated and 11,000 standing.
