More About This Card

Robert Wadlow, known as the "Alton Giant" due to his birthplace in Alton, Illinois, remains an extraordinary figure in medical and human history. Born in 1918, his incredible height of 8 feet 11 inches was the result of an abnormality in his pituitary gland, which caused it to secrete excessive amounts of growth hormone. Sadly, his condition also brought about numerous health problems.

Wadlow's remarkable growth began almost from birth. By the time he was eight years old, he was already taller than his father. By the age of 10, he stood over six feet tall and continued to grow steadily throughout his teenage years. His unusual size required special accommodations, from custom-made clothing and furniture to shoes that could support his massive frame. Despite his physical challenges, Wadlow was known for his mild-mannered and intelligent personality, which endeared him to many.

His life, though impactful, was short-lived. Wadlow toured with the Ringling Brothers Circus and appeared at various public events, where he gained widespread attention and admiration. However, his condition inevitably led to various health issues. His large size put a strain on his legs and back. He wore leg braces to walk and had little sensation in his feet, which resulted in a fateful injury: a poorly fitted brace caused a blister that became infected. Despite emergency treatment, the infection led to his demise in 1940 at the young age of 22.

Robert Wadlow’s legacy lives on through various means, including statues, photographic exhibitions, and segments in medical textbooks. He represents a poignant embodiment of the struggles and limitations of the human body, but also of a spirit that transcended the confines of his physical stature. His life story is a testament to the idea that the strength of one's character can inspire millions, irrespective of the physical challenges one faces.
