Fast Facts & Insights: Knowledge Cards

Swift is a fantastic flier who spends nearly his whole life in the air. In the air, it sleeps, eats, drinks, and mates. Swift only returns to the ground for nesting.

More About This Card

Swifts are among the most aerial of birds, spending most of their lives in the sky. These remarkable creatures have evolved to perform nearly every vital biological function while airborne. They eat, drink, sleep, and even mate without ever needing to land. The beauty of their flight is matched only by its efficiency and necessity, as these activities are carried out at dizzying heights.

Swifts consume primarily flying insects and airborne spiders, capturing them during flight. Their diet necessitates constant movement in wide-ranging flights, as they cover vast areas to find sufficient food. Even more fascinating is how swifts drink by skimming the surfaces of lakes and rivers, scooping up water with their beaks while continuing to fly at full speed.

Sleeping while flying might seem an extraordinary feat, yet swifts have mastered this as well. They can enter a state of unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, where one half of the brain rests while the other half remains alert. This remarkable adaptation allows them to rest mid-air without plummeting to the ground.

The mating process of swifts, which also occurs during flight, is a swift affair—quick and coordinated. The actual act is brief, ensuring that both birds are not encumbered for too long, which could make them vulnerable to predators.

Ground contact for swifts is almost exclusively reserved for nesting. They typically choose high, vertical structures like cliffs or steeples to stay out of reach of many predators. Their nests are constructed from materials collected on the wing, such as feathers, straw, and even airborne seeds, all bound together with saliva.

Swifts are marvels of nature, embodying the very essence of life in the skies. Their entire lifecycle, adapted to the aerial environment, showcases the incredible ways in which animals can evolve to exploit different ecological niches. Each year, when swifts briefly descend to nest, it offers a rare glimpse into the lives of creatures that, quite literally, live their lives on the wing. Their presence, darting through the sky, serves as a reminder of the adaptability and resilience of nature.
