More About This Card

Unicum, a unique herbal liqueur, has a storied past deeply intertwined with the history of Hungary. Its origins trace back to the late 18th century when Dr. Zwack, a royal physician to the Habsburg Court, concocted this herbal remedy for Emperor Joseph II. The emperor's approval, captured in his famous exclamation, "Das ist ein Unikum!" which translates to "This is unique!" led to the liqueur's distinctive name.

The recipe, a closely guarded secret, contains more than 40 different herbs and spices and has been passed down through generations of the Zwack family. Originally created as a medicinal tonic, Unicum quickly gained popularity as a digestif, enjoyed both within the Austro-Hungarian Empire and internationally.

However, the two World Wars and the subsequent Communist takeover in Hungary profoundly impacted the production and distribution of Unicum. The Zwack family fled Hungary during World War II, and upon their return, found their factory nationalized and the production of their beloved liqueur under government control. It wasn't until the fall of the Iron Curtain that the Zwack descendants could reclaim their family heritage.

In 1988, following the end of Communist rule, Peter Zwack returned to Budapest. He restarted production using the original recipe that his grandfather had secretly taken to exile in Italy. Today, Unicum is produced in the same factory on the banks of the Danube, restored to its former glory and still owned by the Zwack family.

Unicum is more than just a drink in Hungary; it's a symbol of resilience and endurance. Its distinct flavor, characterized by its bitter taste and dark color, is often enjoyed neat, chilled, or as part of various cocktails. The liqueur is also encapsulated in a distinctive round bottle, further cementing its iconic status.

Beyond its historical significance and its role in Hungarian culture, Unicum has also become a global ambassador for Hungarian cuisine and tradition. Its ability to survive and thrive despite political upheavals symbolizes the unyielding spirit of the Hungarian people. This herbal liqueur remains a cherished tradition, passed on through generations, and continues to be a unique emblem of Hungary's national identity and heritage.
