Cher Ami was not just any pigeon, but a highly decorated war hero who played a crucial role during World War I. Serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Cher Ami was one of the many pigeons used to carry vital messages across enemy lines when other communication means had failed. This valorous bird became famous for a specific mission that occurred during the Battle of the Argonne Forest.
In October 1918, more than 500 men of the 77th Infantry Division, also known as "The Lost Battalion," were trapped behind enemy lines without food or ammunition and were being bombarded by both German troops and friendly fire. In a desperate plea for help, Major Charles Whittlesey dispatched several pigeons with messages asking for the friendly fire to cease. All previous pigeons had been killed by enemy fire, making Cher Ami the division’s last hope.
Despite being gravely injured - shot through the chest and losing a leg - Cher Ami valiantly continued her 25-minute flight back to her loft at division headquarters 25 miles away. Her determination and resilience were astounding. The message she carried, which was tucked into a small canister strapped to her injured leg, read: "We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven's sake, stop it!"
Thanks to Cher Ami’s heroic efforts, the message was received in time, and the artillery fire was redirected. This act saved the lives of nearly 200 men who would have otherwise been doomed. For her gallantry, Cher Ami was awarded the Croix de Guerre, a prestigious French military decoration, by the French government.
Cher Ami became a symbol of courage and perseverance under extraordinarily harsh conditions. After the war, the brave pigeon was sent back to the United States, where she lived the rest of her days in recognition of her service. Her legacy is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, where her stuffed remains are displayed, continuing to inspire generations with her story of dedication and bravery in the harshest of circumstances.
